Melissa's primary areas of responsibility include:
- Criminal/Public Safety Law
- Clery Act compliance
- Public records and contract review
Melissa is responsible for providing legal services to The Ohio State University Department of Public Safety, including the divisions of Police, Security Services, Emergency Management and Fire Prevention Services, Communications Center, Administration, and Business Services. Melissa participates in law enforcement activities, including the development of search warrants in major criminal cases and the coordination of criminal investigations conducted by University entities, and she provides advice and assistance during events and emergency situations.
Prior to joining Ohio State, Melissa served as in-house counsel for the Ohio Department of Public Safety where she provided legal advice and services to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Ohio Investigative Unit, the Office of Criminal Justice Services, and the Governor’s Highway Safety Office. Melissa also previously worked as an Assistant City Prosecutor for the City of Columbus. In this position, she performed trial and appellate work, as well as serving as the Mental Health Court Prosecutor. Melissa has presented at a number of Continuing Legal Education Courses (CLEs) and formerly served as a member of the Franklin County Fatality Review Board and Franklin County Safe Communities.
Education
Melissa graduated with honors in 1998 from The Ohio State University, earning a B.A. in English, and she is a 2001 graduate of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
