Alexandra T. Schimmer Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel

Prior to joining the University, Alexandra served as Ohio's Solicitor General (and, prior to that, the Chief Deputy Solicitor General) in the Ohio Attorney General's office. In that role, she conducted the State's major appeals–both civil and criminal–in the U.S. Supreme Court, the Ohio Supreme Court, and the federal courts of appeals, and provided counsel to a broad range of state leaders and agencies on litigation, legislative, and policy matters. She has been recognized by the National Law Journal and the National Association of State Attorneys General, among others, for her U.S. Supreme Court advocacy on behalf of the State of Ohio. Before joining the Attorney General's office, Alexandra was a litigator with Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP in Columbus.

From both her private practice and government service, Alexandra has extensive experience representing colleges and universities on a range of subjects, including constitutional matters, public contracts and construction, privacy law, public records, intellectual property, employment matters, and legal issues arising from university medical centers and athletic programs.

In addition to her legal practice, Alexandra is involved in state and national law reform efforts, law teaching, and various pro bono activities. Since 2008, she has served by appointment of the Governor as an Ohio Commissioner to the Uniform Law Commission. In 2012, she was the Harris Distinguished Practitioner at the University of Cincinnati Law School. And in 2007, she was honored with the Columbus Bar Association's award for outstanding pro bono service by an individual for her litigation work with Ohio's Civil Gideon project.

Prior to law school Alexandra was a Fulbright Fellow at Cambridge University in England, and following law school served as a law clerk to the Hon. Sidney H. Stein of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and the Hon. R. Guy Cole, Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
